Historical Note

The Elmwood Community Church was founded in 1921 out of the Elmwood Union Chapel Association which was founded in 1897. The church began with 188 charter members representing 14 denominations and called James F. English as its first pastor. At the time the Sunday School and Ladies Aid Society were already established with the Sunday school being founded in 1873 and the Ladies Aid Society dating back to at least 1917 with the Ladies Benevolent Sewing Society going back further to 1857. Due to the growing membership in the church, Sunday school, ladies' society, and other organizations, the chapel building was quickly outgrown with construction for a new church beginning in 1926 along with the arrival of a new pastor, Charles K. Tracy, and the cornerstone laid in 1927. In 1947, the Cambridge St parsonage was constructed with the first occupant in 1948. In 1955, the church sanctuary was renovated along with the parish house in 1957. Shortly after in 1958, the church steeple was raised.

Between 1967 and 1969, the church experienced many changes with the disbanding of the women’s federation that formed in 1928 from the Ladies Aid Society, the reorganization of the church boards, the burning of the mortgage, and the availability of church facilities to Greater Hartford organizations. Over the following years, the church formed and dissolved committees, updated the building and facilities, changed pastors, celebrated anniversaries, worked with the community, and opened their space to other community organizations and businesses. As the church entered the later 2010s and 2020s, membership and finances declined until the church permanently closed in 2024.
