Historical Note
Tabernacle Congregational Church was gathered on May 27, 1866 following the consolidation of two schools originally founded in 1857 and attached to the First Congregational Church. The consolidation resulted in the formation of the Tabernacle Mission and the creation of an attached Sunday-school, and finally in the establishment of the Tabernacle Congregational Church. The church was located at the corner of North Morgan Street and Grand Avenue in Chicago's West Town. Briefly, following the Great Chicago Fire in 1871, the church became nondenominational, as the church's congregational and financial backers dealt with the aftermath of the fire. The church rejoined the Chicago Association of Congregational Churches in 1881. The church remained an important part of the West Town area, having been engaged in multiple outreach programs and other community building projects throughout the church's history, until its closing in 1956.
