Historical Note

The history of the Irving Park Immanuel Congregational Church in Chicago’s East Irving Park district began with the establishment of a Sunday school in 1896. The Sunday school was established by Rev. Jesse Brooks, then the pastor of the Irving Park Reformed Church. From the Sunday school community arose a desire to establish a Congregational Church and in 1905 the Irving Park Immanuel Congregational Church was established. 35 founding members signed the church’s charter in 1906. Rev. Ira Milton Grey served as the church’s first minister.

The church building was constructed at the corner of West Berteau Avenue and North Troy Street. At first the congregation inhabited a temporary structure on the lot from 1907 until 1910. In 1910, the basement of the permanent building was completed and the congregation used that space for worship services until the building’s construction was completed in 1925. In 1928, an Austin organ was installed in the church. The building underwent renovations between 1947 and 1949 and a parsonage was purchased at 4122 North Richmond Street in 1950.

The church joined the United Church of Christ after the denomination’s formation in 1957. The church dissolved in 1998. The church building is still used as a church today.
