Historical Note

The Charles Street Congregational Society in North Providence, Rhode Island, was gathered in 1865. In 1880, the society’s name changed to the North Congregational Society in Providence. In 1882, construction on the Charles Street Chapel was completed. In 1895, the church name was changed to the North Congregational Church in Providence. Membership in the church declined through the first decade of the 1900s until it became inevitable that the existing membership could not maintain the church building. In 1912, the church building was given to the Rhode Island Home Missionary Society. Members of the now extinct North Congregational Church may have founded the Peoples Congregational Church in 1917; that church went extinct in 1923.
