Historical Note
The land that became Camp Talahi was purchased from the Young Women’s Christian Association of Detroit in 1949 for $35,000 by the Congregational Association of Detroit. The land was located in Howell, Michigan, adjacent to Lake Chenago. A nonprofit trust was created in 1951 by the Congregational Association of Detroit and the Michigan-Indiana Synod of the Evangelical and Reformed Church to manage and operate the campground. This nonprofit organization, Camp Talahi, Inc., managed the campground until 1965 when the Detroit Metropolitan Association, the successor to the Congregational Association of Detroit, relinquished control of the camp to the Michigan Conference of the United Church of Christ. The Michigan Conference solely supported and operated the campground until 2012. The camp operates today as the Camp Talahi Retreat and Nature Center and is managed by Camp Talahi, a nonprofit organization formed by a consortium of Michigan United Church of Christ members and ministers in 2013.

Abstract
The land that became Camp Talahi, in Howell, Michigan, was purchased from the Young Women’s Christian Association of Detroit in 1949. A nonprofit trust was created in 1951 by the Congregational Association of Detroit and the Michigan-Indiana Synod of the Evangelical and Reformed Church to manage and operate the campground. This nonprofit organization managed the campground until 1965 when the Michigan Conference of the United Church of Christ began directly managing Camp Talahi. The camp is still operational and now known as the Camp Talahi Retreat and Nature Center. The majority of the records within this collection are meeting minutes and reports from the committees which together managed the campgrounds. The records also contain legal records related to the purchase of the campground lands and the incorporation of Camp Talahi.
