Historical Note

When the First Congregational Church of Colorado Springs, Colorado, moved to the north side of the city in 1888, Rev. James B. Gregg, minister of the First Congregational Church, and Rev. George C. Woodruff, a superintendent for Sunday Schools for the Congregational Sunday School and Publishing Society, agreed to organize a Sunday School in the south side of the city. The intention was that a new church would develop out of the Sunday School and in 1889 the Second Congregational Church was established. The first minister for the church was Manley Dayton Ormes. A building for the church was erected in 1890 at 407 South Tejon Street.

The Second Congregational Church continued to serve its community until 1948 when the church closed. The building was sold to Theatine priests and the first Catholic Mass at the new Our Lady of Guadalupe Church was held on September 19, 1948. The church building was again sold in 1984. The building currently still stands and is currently being used for commercial office space.
