Historical Note
The Feeding Hills Congregational Church in Feeding Hills, Agawam, Massachusetts was first organized as the Sixth Congregational Church in Springfield on November 10, 1762. In 1756, the parish of West Springfield split from Springfield which included modern day Agawam and much of Holyoke. In 1800, Agawam split from West Springfield and was incorporated as a town in 1855. The first meeting house, constructed in 1761, was built about halfway between Agawam center and Feeding Hill. Rev. Sylvanus Griswold, ordained November 17, 1762, was the first minister of the church and served as pastor until his death on December 4, 1819.
Following the death of Rev. Griswold, and after years of declining membership, the church was reorganized as the Congregational Church of Christ in Feeding Hills. The second, and current, meeting house was constructed in 1834. In 1855 the church reorganized as the Feeding Hills Congregational Church. In 1857, the meeting house was renovated and ownership was transferred from proprietors to the church society. In 1884, a chapel was added to the meeting house. The Feeding Hills Congregational Church, UCC continues to serve the community today.
