Scope of Collection

The collection consists of essays, sermons, pastor diaries, clippings, commencement programs, 1 photograph, 1 etching, and a copy of a 1912 Sea Breeze, published by the Boston Seafarer’s Friend. Mary Gridley’s compositions from classes at Lewis Academy. Many of the essays are unattributed. They could have been written by Mary or by Frederick. There is a section of clippings dedicated to Frederick’s career. The bulk of the time frame is from 1868 with Mary’s essays through 1890, but several items do not have dates.

Historical Note

Frederick Lorenzo Stevens grew up in Winona, Minnesota, attended Olivet College, where he graduated in 1882 with a bachelor of arts degree. In 1886-1887 class, he graduated from Yale Divinity School in the Graduate 4th year, and listed as a Hooker Fellowship recipient. The Congregational Yearbook lists him as ordained in 1885, and served as pastor to the Southington Connecticut Congregational Church from 1885 to 1888. On October 7, 1887, he married Mary E. Gridley of Southington, Connecticut. In 1888, Stevens was dismissed from the denomination. Mary Gridley attended the Lewis Academy (years including 1868-1874). The Lewis Academy was the forerunner of the public high school in Southington.
