Sermons, circa 1754-1781
Church book, 1720-1806
This collection consists of a single record book. The records in this volume were kept by the church's first minister, Rev. Daniel Putnam, and his successor, Rev. Eliab Stone. Included are vital records of membership, baptisms, marriages, and disciplinary matters, as well as meeting minutes and the church's covenants from 1720 and 1781.
Sermon notes, 1727
This volume contains records of sermons preached at the First Church in Dorchester in 1727. The notes include records for boht the forenoon and afternoon sermons. The notes include the relevant scripture passages and name of the preacher. Preachers noted within the volume include John Danforth, Increase Sumner of Roxbury, Samuel Mather, and Thomas Clap.
Membership records, 1757-1781
This small pamphlet lists the names and dates of those who were entered into the membership roll of the Frist Church.
Church service records, 1773-1784
This notebook contains near weekly records of church services. For each week, the author noted the name of the preacher and the bible passaged used during their sermon for both the morning and afternoon services. The author also notes baptisms that occurred, what days were sacrament days, and other general notes about special events or changes to the usual service.
Sermons, 1689-1701
Courtship proposal, 1714
This proposal, dated June 14, 1714, was written by John Wise, to John Rogers, about beginning a formal courtship between John Wise Jr. and Mary Rogers. The letter is complimentary towards John Rogers and his family, and offers suggestions how a union between John and Mary might benefit the families involved. Evidently the courtship went forward as Mary and John were married four months later on October 23, 1714.
Will and Testament, undated
This folder contains an unsigned copy of John Rogers' final will and testament. In the will he enumerates how his property and money was to be split between his wife, sons, daughters, and sons-in-law.
Covenant, 1739
This collection contains the original covenant of the Second Church in Cambridge. The covenant was created during the formation of the church in 1739 and includes the tenants that would be upheld by members of the church and a list of names of the original members.
Request for reconciliation, 1747
This single document is a petition by six signatories requesting reconciliation with disaffected members of the church. The dispute arose over differences of opinion regarding the administration of the Lord's Supper (Communion). The document is dated May 4, 1747.
