Historical Note

The First Congregational Church and Society in Taunton, Mass. was gathered in 1637, the same year as the town was founded by members of the Plymouth Colony. The first minister was Rev. William Hooke. A parcel of land in the center of the town was set aside for a meeting house which was built in 1647. Since then, additional meeting houses have been built on the same piece of land in 1729, 1804, and 1830. A chapel was added to the building in 1869 and a parsonage was given to the Society in 1865. The Church continues to serve the town of Taunton as a member of the American Unitarian Society.
