Biographical Note
Abigail Cleaveland (1759-1834) was born to Thankful Paine and Aaron Cleaveland in Canterbury, Connecticut. During the Revolutionary War, her father and brother served in the Continental Army. After marrying Parker Cleaveland, the son of Separatist minister Rev. John Cleaveland, she moved to Byfield, Massachusetts and joined the church there in 1795. Her son, John Payne Cleaveland, became a Congregational minister and was ordained at the Salem Tabernacle Church in 1827.
