This collection contains an original signed 1810 lease agreement between Sylvanus and Rachael Smalley and George Sessions and Caleb Atwater. Also included is a 20th century transcription of the lease agreement.

Biographical Note

Sylvanus Smalley was a politically active landowner and early settler in the town of Lenox in Madison County, New York, during the early part of the 19th century. Madison Country was formed out of Chenango County in 1806 and Smalley elected a Member of Assembly in the first general election of the county and was further an associate judge for the county. He was also listed as a state senator for Madison Country from 1809-1812. He built the first tavern in Lenox atop Quality Hill. He was also an active member of the Lenox Congregational Church and one of the first trustees of the church. He was married to Rachael Smalley.
