Biographical / Historical
The American Board of Commissioners for Foriegn Missions was created in 1810 by recent graduates of Williams College. This organization sent missionaries, starting with the Hawaiian Islands, and stretched across the globe. While the organization was not strictly Congregational initially, by the late 19th century was run by that denomination. The name of the body changed to United Church Board for World Ministries in 1961 and later to Wider Church Ministries, its current name.

Custodial History
David Stowe, served the American Board's later incarnation, United Church Board for World Ministries (UCBWM) as general secretary from 1956-1962 and executive vice president from 1971-1984. Rev. Stowe took custody of the boxes, which were not included in materials transferred to the new head quarters when they vacated Boston offices at 14 Beacon Street in the 1950s. Those boxes were inherited by his daughter, Elizabeth Hambrick-Stowe.
