Scope and Contents

This collection is primarily made up of diaries kept by William Woodwell. These daily entries focus primarily on weather, but include tidbits of Woodwell's life. The earliest diary is from 1872 and latest from 1911. There are many years not included. See the container list for an exact listing of years.

The other material in this collection includes one reproduction of a family photograph, a notebook with transcriptions, a political candidate nomination for Woodwell from 1893 for the Prohibition party, a reproduction of William Herbert Woodwell's (son's) autobiography from 1953, and a biographical explanation from the donor.

Biographical Note

William Haskell Woodwell was born September 9, 1844. He was ordained in Wells Maine by the Congregational Council, June 12, 1873. He served Wells, ME; Mt. Vernon, NH; Pahala, HI; Orient, NY; New Marlboro, MA; Sandwich, MA; Hampton, CT; Hampton Falls, NH; Pomona, FL, Haddam Neck, CT. According to donor Archer Bush, Rev. Woodwell's time in Hawaii was not as a missionary, but as a chaplain for fruit company.

He married Martha Haskell and they had six children: Julian, Eva, William Herbert, Archer, Carolus, and a child not named in the biographical sketch from the donor. Woodwell died April 8,1926, in Kensington, MD.

Abstract

William Haskell Woodwell was born Sept 9, 1844 and served as a Congregational Minister within the North Atlantic Seabord, Hawaii, and Florida. This collection consists primarily of Rev. Woodwell's diaries, which in turn focus primarily on the weather with some notes of his personal life.

Arrangement

The diaries are arranged chronologically. The loose material is not voluminous to warrant further arrangement.
