Historical Note

The St. John’s German Evangelical Church was founded in 1835 by a group of German immigrants who had settled in Wheeling. They first worshipped in a frame building, and then the county court house, before erecting a church in 1836. This first church was the “Erste Deutsche Lutherische Kirche” (First German Lutheran Church). In 1870, the church merged with another parish and the name changed to St. John’s German Evangelical Protestant Church. Along with the merger came a new church building which was completed in 1872. The third and final church building was constructed in 1908 after the congregation was forced to sell the second to the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad in 1806. Another merger in 1961 resulted in one final name change to St. John’s United Church of Christ.
