Scope and Contents

Records in this collection include administrative records Council for Social Action committees and subcommittees, including minutes, policy statements, reports and correspondence. Information and correspondence related to the opposition to the CSA is also included. The collection also contains a large amount of published and unpublished material concerning the issues which the CSA hoped to address. Additionally it includes some photographic documentation of CSA activities.

Biographical / Historical

The Council for Social Action was founded in 1934 to address the social ills prevelant during the depression.There was some opposition to the organization the formation of the Committee Opposing Congregationl Political Action being one example. It continued to opperate through its committees until 1956 when it began to merge into the Council for Christian Social action. Following this merge records were kept sepperately for both organiztions until 1961 when all records were switched to the CCSA.

This collection is arranged into five broad series and 26 subseries. This is an abnormal configuration due to the legacy nature of the collection. The five top level series are as follows: CSA central records, CSA sumcommittees, Direction of the CSA-Opposition and support,Micellaneous papers, and Printed materials articles and photographs. Files are ussually arranged chronologically by folder.

Donated in 1990 by the Gift of United Church of Christ Archives in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. No accession number given.
