Historical Note

Edgartown Congregational Church was established in 1641 or 1642. Two notable early ministers included Thomas Mayhew, Jr.; John Cotton, Jr., uncle to Cotton Mather. It has had several names over the years: Edgartwon Congregational Church; First Orthodox Congregational; Church of Christ of Martha's (Martin's) Vinyard; Great Harbour. It federated with a Baptist church as far back as 1853, if not earlier. In a copy of the Articles of Faith and Covenant dated 1853, it refers to itself as a Paedobaptist Congergational church. The current congregation calls itself The Federated Church of Martha's Vinyard.
