Biographical / Historical

The Grand Avenue Congregational Church began as the Central Sunday School at Grand and Lawndale avenues in Chicago circa 1890. It began holding Sunday services above a feed store on that same corner in September 1892, under the leadership of Chicago Congregational Theological Seminary student J. U. Stotts. In 1894, the church rented and rehabilitated an abandoned store building nearby. The church would obtain a permanent location in the next decade when it purchased a lot in 1907 and built a building there. The church dedicated the completed building on June 4, 1911. The church, experiencing significant growth, constructed a new addition called the Church House beginning in 1923. On March 6, 1929, the church voted to absorb the Pacific Congregational Church. The church merged with fellow Chicago church Pilgrim German Congregational Church to form the United Congregational Church in 1943. The United Congregational Church closed in 1976.
