Abstract The St. Mark’s Social Center was founded in 1941 next to the St. Mark’s Congregational Church in Roxbury, Massachusetts. The Social Center served as a meeting and community space primarily for the Black residents of Roxbury. Abstract The Winthrop club was founded in 1858. It was named for its original meeting place, The Winthrop House, it was established to provide social and intellectual environment for its members to discuss matters of theological understanding.
